Learning More About Poole in England

The town of Poole can be found on the coast in Dorset that is located on the southern coast of the United Kingdom. It has the second largest population in Dorset. People were thought to have started living in this area as far back as the Iron Age.

A big part of the town's prosperity was based on the wool trade that would be helped out due to it being a port town. Used as a main spot for the invasion that took place on D-Day during WWII. Due to the port it is also a natural location for many tourist to visit.

Not only will people visit this location for the many beaches, but for history and the Poole Arts Center that is located here. With past settlements being found to be in this area for over 2, 500 years, you know that there is tons of history to be found.

Not only have the Celts been here in the past, but also a place that the Romans would call home for a while. During Anglo-Saxon times it would be part of the Kingdom of Wessex. Used as a location for fishing in the past as well, and at present time too.

During 1433 King Henry VI would once again realize the importance of the location of Poole, and gave it Staple port status. This gave the town the chance to export out wool and build in size. They would even begin trading with North America during the 16th century.

Growing even more prosperous during the Industrial Revolution, Poole would see many people who would be employed by the harbor. Landmarks include the Quay that you can see a mixture of older homes and the Old Town which includes many historic buildings.
